The purpose of this course is to introduce students some of the stylistic and technical approaches of music written since 1900. The course will be broken up into three units that each deal with one topics or broad set of aesthetic concerns from twentieth and twenty-first century composition and art.
For each unit, students will be expected to write a composition that demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the approaches discussed throughout the class. Units will also include examining representative compositions through readings, analyses, short student presentations, listenings, as well as brief examinations of related historical contexts and related creative works from fields outside of music. Each composition that students write will also be performed by outside musicians or members of the class.
