LIU Chu-Chuan (劉姝嫥) / Cellist

Born in Dadaocheng(大稻埕), a historical district in Taipei
Taiwan, cellist LIU Chu-Chuan started her musical education from early childhood on in the so-called
” Experimental classes for musically gifted children”.

She went on to study in Vienna, Austria with Senta Benesch, Angelika May at the Hochschule fűr Musik und Darstellende Kunst and Barbara Ronte, Andreas Lindenbaum at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien. During the time in Europe, she
had played in Master classes for several renowned cellists: Michel Strauss (Paris), Heidi Litchauer (Salzburg), Christopher Henkel (Freiburg) among others, and for a short period of time, studied Viola da Gamba with Jose Vasquez and took part in
chamber seminars lead by the Wiener Schubert Trio to broaden her musical horizon.

After receiving the concert artist diploma with distinguished honors (Auszeichnung), LIU Chu-Chuan went further to study with Stephen Kates at the Peabody Institute in the United States on a scholarship, and as cellist of the Peabody Camerata, had the
opportunity to participate in world premieres of works commissioned and conducted by the great cellist Mstislav Rostropovich at the festival of Evian, France.

She was selected” Young Musician of the Year” when she went back to Taiwan in 1995, and started her teaching career as well as giving solo and chamber concerts. An engaged performer for contemporary music, She has toured with CCOT (Contemporary Chamber Orchestra Taipei) to New York, Boston, Vancouver,
Shanghai, and given premiers of various solo cello works written by contemporary composers.

Based in Taipei ever since, LIU Chu Chuan remains active internationally and is one of the most in-demand cellists of her generation in Taiwan. She had been invited to join the members of the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota to give concerts in U.S.A;is faculty of the Cremona International Music Academy and Festival during summers;Jury member of the 2019 International Dotzauer Competition for Young Cellists in Dresden Germany and gave master classes in Lyon Conservatory, France the same year. Most recently, she toured as a special guest with the CUHK Soloists Ensemble in Shenzhen, Salzburg, Linz and gave performances featuring works by Taiwanese composers in Paris July 2024.
