Lecturer: Luc Houtkamp
Luke Houtkamp is a composer and saxophonist with a background in jazz and improvisation, dedicated to connecting different musical genres. His musical goal is to establish a continuity between improvisation and composition, blurring the lines between the two. His music is heavily influenced by jazz, rock, and contemporary music. He utilizes computers, live electronic instruments, and various notation formats to create highly personal works that are unique in both timbre and concept. Stylistic freedom is not a postmodern cliché, but rather based on his belief that musical style is not the primary factor, but rather should serve the expressiveness of the music itself. He is most concerned with how musicians play together, and how to guide this performance through composition and computer technology. In 2005, he received the Boy Edgar Award, the most prestigious award in Dutch jazz and improvisation.
