Congratulations! Yu-Hsien CHENG's work "Shipwreck", a graduate student majoring in electronic technology and music, was selected for NYCEMF 2025 New York Electronic Music Festival. (Instructor: Professor Yu-Chung TSENG).
Through the use of Max/MSP’s synthesizer-related programs, I experimented with creating synthesizer sounds and conducting sound experiments. Some interesting materials discovered during this process ultimately provided the inspiration for this composition. The sound design concept for this piece focuses on low-frequency sounds paired with high-frequency, constantly flickering sounds. The goal is to allow the listener to quietly appreciate the subtle changes in sound while maintaining a slower tempo.
Max/MSP’s ability to create synthesizer sounds opened up many unexpected sound materials for me, which led me to occasionally explore new elements during the creative process.
The advantage of synthesizers is that once I’ve decided on the direction of the music, I can transform other sounds into the desired form with just a few steps. Moreover, this process often results in the creation of additional sounds.
Many of the sudden sounds in this music come from experimental results I hadn’t initially anticipated. After being appropriately modified, these sounds become fitting musical elements, seamlessly integrated into the piece.
